moved to England in 1912 to earn a living as a boxer, circus performer, and self-defense trainer of English detectives....two years later designated an "enemy alien" with the outbreak of WWI, interned as a prisoner of war but became a nurse and physical therapist to severely injured soldiers...developed a system of rehabilitative exercises in order to regain strength, mobility, flexibility,.....widely credited when none of the inmates succumbed to the influenza epidemic of 1918.
1926, emigrated to the U.S. where he opened the first Pilates studio in New York City with his wife, Clara.
Embraced by the dance community but soon discovered by athletes, theater companies, fitness enthusiasts and then the world at large, Pilates has become a technique to enhance the quality of life, in all aspects of performance and functioning.
